Top 20 Best Mechanical Engineering Colleges in India in 2018

Mechanical Engineering deals with the moving parts i.e. the parts which convey a sense of motion. Mechanical Engineering consists of Analysis, Design, Manufacturing, Control, Operations, Testing and Maintenance of Mechanical Systems i.e. any system that consists of moving parts. Mechanical Systems can increase in size and complexity from a Precision Gear and FM Radio Transmitter to a Car Engine and a Nuclear Power Plant.

After completing graduation with Mechanical Engineering, an Engineer will have a pretty knowledge of nearly each and every branch of Engineering like Computer Applications, Electricity, Structure, Mathematics, etc. along with the knowledge of their own branch like Design, Drafting, Manufacturing, Assembling, etc. Also, Mechanical Engineers can get a job nearly everywhere an engineer is needed. That is why, Mechanical Engineering branch is said to be “An Evergreen Branch” of engineering. And because of that, most of students after completing 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as major subjects and willing to take admission in engineering give first priority to Mechanical Engineering branch and try to take admission in this branch only. As a result, seats in this branch fill out very soon in first few rounds of counseling.

To be a Mechanical Engineer a student should have proper knowledge of Physics and should have an ability to think creatively. A mechanical engineer should be passionate towards his/her work.

After completing 12th, a student has an ample time of about 3-5 months, depending upon the time taken by Universities to start the Course, to prepare themselves with the brief knowledge in Mechanical Engineering. In that free time, a student can do following things to develop foundation for Mechanical Engineering –

  • Learn some skills related to your field like Bicycle Repair, Welding, Drilling, Carpentry, Robotics, etc.
  • Learn to operate different tools like Vernier Scale, Screw Gauge, Hammer, Saw, Welding tools, etc.
  • Try to disassemble an old and damaged bicycle or you can even start with an old mobile charger or even a switch board and observe what components it has. Try to understand how it would have been working and then again assemble it. See if it is working properly again. If not, find what has gone wrong.
  • Join some courses related to your field like AutoCAD and CAD.

After completing bachelor’s course or graduation with mechanical engineering, an engineer can continue their career and jobs in public as well as private sector with any of the fields of Mechanical engineering like,

  • Production Engineering
  • Aerospace Engineering
  • Thermal Engineering
  • Automobile Engineering
  • Fluid Mechanics Engineering

To do research and innovations in this field and to get more knowledge of a particular aspect of Mechanical Engineering, a student can do Post Graduation (M.E. or M.Tech) or Specialization in any one of the above mentioned fields by qualifying GATE.

As Mechanical Engineering is very broad, other than the above mentioned branches, there are much more branches to do specialization in this field.

In addition, a mechanical engineer should have a good physical strength to carry out workshop tasks assigned during the college sessions. Since a lot of physical strength is required for mechanical engineering, a lot of arguments arise regarding girls should do Mechanical Engineering or not. Many people say that “Girls lack of Physical Strength and hence, should not opt for Mechanical Engineering”. Because of that very few girls opt for Mechanical Engineering.

How can people judge girls by saying that they don’t have physical strength in the era when girls are winning gold medals in Gymnastics and Wrestling? Many girls develop their physical strength by Gymnastics, Proper Diet and Weight Exercises. Hence, one should not underestimate the strength of a girl and should encourage girls to do Mechanical Engineering.
