Before discussing about the best medical colleges in India and the qualities they must have, let us discuss about the qualities a medical student should possess to be a doctor. In addition to the academics, a medical student should possess following qualities:

  • To become a doctor, a student should have a willingness to help people. Don’t become a doctor for any of such reasons like, it is a prestigious profession, or that you were just good in science. This profession requires a lot of dedication and an attitude to serve people instead of thinking about money. Many times the profession requires that you should give priority to the welfare of the people, to save the lives of people instead of thinking about your fees.
  • Be prepared to serve people at any point of time whether it is day or night.
  • Develop good communication skills. Always communicate with your patients and their relatives as politely as possible. Don’t answer your patients or their relatives in a rude manner. Always keep in mind that they come to you with a lot of hope and faith. No matter how much tied or frustrated you are stay calm and polite as much as possible.

A student must consider following criteria for selecting a best medical college. First he/she should make a comparative analytical report of the various Indian medical colleges by visiting their websites and gets information regarding the following points:

Recognition by UGC: The first and foremost thing which a student must consider while selecting appropriate college is whether it is recognized by UGC (University Grant Commission) or not. Usually universities mentioned under private, deemed, state and central categories are all affiliated by UGC.

Campus: The campus of the college is the place where a student spends most of the time. The surroundings and environment also affects a lot in nurturing the dreams of a student. So, the campus of the college should be filled with positivity. Posters and flex displaying inspiring quotes can be put at appropriate places of the campus which inspires a student and fill a student with new energy to move towards their goal. It is necessary because it takes about 5-10 years for a student to become a doctor. At times a student may get demotivated by some failures. In such times, these quotes play a major role.

Infrastructure: Properly ventilated classrooms and well equipped, well ventilated laboratories should be there in medical college which provides an appropriate environment for learning of students.

Practical approach: Practical approach is the most crucial part in which a medical college should focus. In addition to academics, medical college should provide appropriate practical knowledge to demonstrate the theoretical concepts. It’s because a doctor’s work is purely practical and if a medical student is strong in theory but weak in practical, it may cause danger to the patient’s life if that student try to cure a patient. A medical college should focus more on practical aspects of knowledge than theoretical concepts.

Up-to-date syllabus: Since new diseases and new medicines are discovered every now and then, medical colleges should periodically update the syllabus of the medical students so that they can get the up-to-date knowledge regarding their streams. The education should be innovative. Students should be encouraged to do research and innovations in their field and subjects especially during their specialisation course. In that way students can get better knowledge of their subjects.

Faculties and Professors of the college: Faculties and professors of the college also play a major role in shaping the career of a student. Hence the faculties and professors of the college should be highly qualified and experienced. They should have a good experience in teaching field and practical field as well. Faculties and professors should have proper skills of delivering knowledge to the students.

Placements and internships: As told earlier practical knowledge is more important than theoretical concepts, proper internships should be provided to the students so that they can get the proper work experience for their future. Proper placements to the students should be provided which is the ultimate dream of every medical student.

Mess and Hostels: Although Mess and Hostels are not a major deciding factor for the selection of a college but since a student has to spend 5-10 years with a college, he/she should consider that also. As sound mind rests in sound body, the quality of food provided in the college mess should be up to the mark (it is important if the student is residing in the college hostel away from his home) and the rooms of the hostel should also be well maintained and furnished. The hostel should have a calm and healthy environment which encourages a student to perform well in their academics.

In addition, events and fests should be organized through which the students can refresh themselves from the monotonousness of studies. Thus a medical college should consider all the above points in addition to their own efforts to provide best service to the students. After all medical colleges are the ladder to someone’s dreams.
