While selecting career after 10th, we often get to hear that, “Go for Science, there are vast career opportunities and handsome salary in this field”. What students know about Commerce is that there are very limited career options in this field. After 10+2 they can only go with B. Com, BBA, CA or CS. It’s not like that. There are vast career options for Commerce students after 10+2 as well as after Graduation. Also there is no compulsion of clearing any entrance exams as is there in Science and Mathematics except for some courses like CA and CS. What you have to do is to just clear the 12th. Some of the popular courses in the field of commerce are –

  1. B. COM

B. Com is one of the most common career option opted by a Commerce student after 12th. B.Com provides a foundation for all aspects of commerce and this is the reason why most of the students go with this field. B. Com course is of two types – B. Com and B. Com (Honours). While B. Com provides an overview of all the subjects of commerce, B. Com (Honours) is a business oriented course and provides specialization in particular subject or field. This is the reason why B. Com (Honours) has a high value in industry.

  1. BACHELOR OF ECONOMICS

Bachelor of Economics or BA with Economics provides a pursuer a degree in a particular field of commerce. Why this course has an importance in the industry is that there is a great demand of economists in the industry because of Privatization of Banks, Globalization and Open Markets. A student with Economics degree can work as a Finance Analyst in corporate Sector where he/she has to make a detailed report on the cash flow and tries to make predictions about the Company in the upcoming years. Hence a student pursuing Bachelor of Economics or BA with Economics degree should be good in calculations and writing work. After completing graduation with Economics a student can get a salary of 4 – 8 lakhs per annum and can work in Accounting, Auditing, Banking & Finance, Insurance Investment and Marketing field.

CA stands for Chartered Accountant. As the name indicates a CA is responsible for maintaining Accounts and Audit information of the Company. A CA can work either as an individual or as a body.    

To be a CA, a student has to go through the following four levels –

  1. Firstly, a student has to clear Common Proficiency Test (CPT) which comprises of four subjects – Accounting, Economics, Law and Quantitative Aptitude. The test occurs two times – initially in June then in December.
  2. Next, he/she has to clear Integrated Professional Competence (IPC) Test. It is a written exam which occurs in two groups.
  3. After clearing IPC Test, student has to go for 3-year Articleship Training where the student has to learn the actual job of a CA in industry.
  4. Finally, student has to clear the CA – Final Examination, clearing which, a student is called CA and is eligible to work in industry.

As we can see that a student has to do a lot of hardwork to be a CA, salary offered to a CA is quite high. Minimum salary which a CA gets after clearing all the four levels ranges from 60,000 to 70,000. Salary of CA varies depending upon how many attempts he/she takes to qualify CA examination, productivity and much more.

  1. CS

CS, also known as Company Secretary is a person responsible for maintaining Laws and Regulations in a company. A Company Secretary advises on Savings, awares about the laws of how to form a company and corporate societies like Depositor Law, Labor Law, etc. and carries a company in legal way.

To be a CS, one has to clear the CS examination conducted by ICSI (Institute of Company Secretaries of India). There are four levels in CS programme –

  1. Firstly, a student has to clear the Foundation Level, where he/she has to study following subjects – (1) Business Environment and Entrepreneurship, (2) Business Management Ethics and Communication, (3) Business Economics and (4) Fundamental of Accounting and Auditing.
  2. After clearing Foundation Level, the student has to qualify Executive Exam, which occurs in two modules. A student can directly enter Executive Level if he/she is graduated.
  3. After clearing Executive Level, a student has to go through 15 months Managerial Training in any authorized company.
  4. Finally, the student has to qualify the professional course which again occurs in two modules, after which a student officially becomes eligible for the post of Company Secretary.

Initially as a fresher, Salary of Company Secretary varies around 40,000 to 50,000 and it has no max limits. It depends on the company and capability of the person.

  1. HOTEL MANAGEMENT

Hotel Management is a course in which a student learns about the hospitality business and how to run and manage Hotels and Restaurants. Various courses which a student can opt to go in this field are B. Sc (Hospitality & Hotel Administration), BA (Hotel Management) and Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM). To do these courses, a student should have qualified 12th examination.

In this course, student learns about the Food Production, House Keeping, Front Office, Personality Development, Kitchen Management, Marketing, Business Communication, etc.

After completion of the course, a student’s salary varies from 2 lakhs per annum to 5 lakhs per annum initially as a fresher.

  1. EVENT MANAGEMENT

In Event Management Course, the student learns about designing and producing events. Various events which an Event Manager has to plan include Meetings, Trade Shows, Fundraisers, Weddings, Anniversaries and Birthday Parties. To be an Event Manager, a student can go for Diploma in Event Management which is 1-year part-time course or he/she can go for MBA in Event Management which is 2-year full-time course. For that a student should have done graduation in any stream.

In Fashion Designing Course, a student learns about clothing, accessories and design which is important for styling purpose. For making career in Fashion Designing, a student can opt for B. Sc (Fashion Designing) Course. To be a Fashion Designer, a student should be a creative person with artistic skills.

  1. JOURNALISM & MASS COMMUNICATION
